Jyoti
Shrivastava is recognized as one of the finest exponent of her
generation in ODISSI. Uniquely, she represents one of the handful
international torchbearers of the parampara of the eminent Odissi
pioneer Guru, the late Deba Prasad Das. At present Jyoti is under
the tutelage of her dance mentor, Guru Shri Durga Charan Ranbir.
As a child, Jyoti was initiated into this dance from by Guru Valmiki
Banerjee and she has evolved over the years into a mature artiste
who understands, loves and breathes Odissi.
Jyoti initially studied under the late Guru Shri Nath Raut who was
the senior most disciple of Deba Prasad Das. A short stint in
Malaysia exposed her to the modernist approach of Ramli Ibrahim,

of Sutra Dance Theatre,
based in Kuala Lumpur.
Jyoti exudes a freshness of presence that reflects her joie de
vivre as well as her caring and positive nature. Jyoti
wonderfully fluid abhinaya is her forte. Her grasp of rasa
comes from within and her chiseled bhangis evoke a moving
temple frieze.
At present, Jyoti mainly dances the compositions of Guru
Durga Charan Ranbir which has superbly suited to her inherent
dramatic flair and sense of music. Major compositions of Shri
Durga Charan Ranbir such as Surya Ashtak, Ashta Nayika,
Dasamahavidya and various intricate Pallavis are now
associated with Jyoti's distinctive style and repertoire.
Jyoti has performed extensively in India and abroad and is the
recipient of various scholarships, fellowships, titles and
awards. This includes a fellowship from the Human resources
Development Ministry, Govt. of India. Other Awards include 'Sringar
Mani' from Sur Sringar of Mumbai, Guru Singhari Shyam Sunder
Award from Odissi Sangeet Sabha and Rashtriya Ekta Award from
the All India National Unity Conference, both in Delhi.
Her training in music - she is an M. Phil. in Classical Music
from Delhi University - helps her development as a dancer.
This is further augmented by intensive research and training
in Odissi.
As Secretary of Jawaharlal Nehru National Youth Centre, Noida,
she has organized International Seminars, symposia, training
programmes, providing opportunities and platform for aspiring
young dancers. Jyoti is also a member of the Visiting Faculty
of the Asian Academy of Film and Television in the Film City
at Noida.
Jyoti is presently at the peak of her career. However,
being the perfectionist she, continues diligently to improve
her art and knowledge through constant practice and research
in Odissi and it's related arts. She sees herself as a devotee
and vehicle to serve the worthy cause of propagating Odissi
through performance and teaching.
One is taken on a spiritual journey as Jyoti rises to the
challenge of attaining perfection in her art at the same time
contributing towards enriching the culture heritage of her
beloved country.
Jyoti Shrivastava is that consumate artist who touches the
core of one's being.
